Film Notes
Deeply in love with life, Fellini went through his existence searching for its meaning. This documentary takes an indepth look at his passion for what he defined, in short, as the enigma, the esoteric, the “unseen world”, in an unceasing pursuit of other possibilities, dimensions, journeys and anything that make the spirit and the mind fly. He initially investigated these aspects (which are present in all his cinema) with the great Jungian psychoanalyst Ernst Bernhard, who not only revealed to him the secrets of the unconscious, but also showed him a new vision of the world through the reading of tarot cards and consulting the I Ching. But it would be his encounter with Professor Gustavo Rol, whom he met for Giulietta degli spiriti, and his experiments that would prove to Fellini that there really are other dimensions and that there is no end to the human journey. Many voices tell us about the magical world of Fellini, from the fortune-teller that Fellini always consulted to Terry Gilliam, from Giuditta Mascioscia, Gustavo Rol’s psychic friend, to the director Damien Chazelle, from Fellini’s closest collaborators and friends to Oscar-winning filmmakers such as William Friedkin. With the extraordinary archive materials from Rai Teche, Istituto Luce and international archives, images of his films and interviews with the scholars who studied his work most, Fellini degli spiriti is a rare, intimate and spiritual portrait of the great director.
