Film Notes

Only one reel is known to survive of Lubitsch’s last German film. The reel shows a central scene which can hardly be appreciated without knowing the context and subtexts. For years Filmmuseum Munchen collected surviving documents, stills and drawings from the production design to reconstruct the story line so that one can get a real idea of Lubitsch’s film which was hardly shown in cinemas due to the financial collapse of Europaische Film-Allianz in autumn 1922. Joachim Barenz developed a piano sound track which leads through this reconstruction which currently consists of only about twenty minutes of moving pictures.
