Small Gauge: Projecting Kodacolor
Mirco Santi (Home Movies).
John Sweeney.
“Remediated” digital screenings aside, projection remains central to a “performative” experience, which should be enjoyed in the cinema if you are to fully appreciate its uniqueness – and this is particularly true for lenticular systems. Consequently, we will be presenting this experience in an almost didactic fashion, with projections on a small screen that simulate the typical end result of the format, and additive colour systems.
Several well-preserved examples of Kodacolor will be projected with the original three-colour lenses, but on contemporary projectors, which are safer and brighter, in order to restore the magic of the system that Kodak perfected in the 1920s. There will also be another film by Edoardo Scotti, which alternates between black-and-white, toning in various colours, and sequences in Kodacolor, Dufaycolor, Agfacolor and Kodachrome. Its very title is a clear statement of intent: Ricordi [a colori] di famiglia 1931-1939 (Family memories [in colour]: 1931-1939). It is a film that should serve as a beacon for future studies on the spread of colour technologies.
