CONVERSATION AVEC MARTIN SCORSESE, EN NOTES ET EN IMAGES

Film Notes

Martin Scorsese is widely celebrated not only for his cinematic mastery but also for the way he uses music to enhance storytelling. For Scorsese, music is not an accessory – it’s a narrative force as essential as dialogue, editing, or visual style. In many of his most iconic films, music becomes a character in its own right. It reflects internal emotions, underscores tension, amplifies cultural settings, and evokes time periods with uncanny precision. Though he has worked with exceptional composers, including Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Howard Shore, and his longtime friend Robbie Robertson, Scorsese’s true passion lies in weaving pre-existing music into his films. These aren’t random choices – they’re often personal. He refers to them as “the soundtrack of my life”, selections drawn from deep memory and emotion. Each track serves a purpose, whether to echo a character’s inner turmoil, bring irony to a violent scene, or contrast the surface of glamour with the grit underneath. Scorsese’s love for music can be traced back to his youth in Little Italy, New York. “I lived in a crowded neighbourhood where every window poured out a different sound,” he once recalled. “From the bars and candy stores to every floor of the apartment buildings, music was everywhere. The radio never stopped. You’d hear the jukebox blaring across the street. In the projects, someone might be playing opera, while the next window played Benny Goodman or rock’n’roll. It was a constant, living soundtrack.” This sonic chaos left a permanent imprint on Scorsese. It instilled in him a sense that music could be cinematic even before he picked up a camera. “I used to think, why don’t we ever hear this in movies?” he said. With his films, he’s answered that question. From Mean Streets to Goodfellas to The Irishman, Scorsese has proven that the right music, at the right moment, can transform not only a scene, but the entire emotional landscape of a film.
