LŐRINCI FONÓBAN

Film Notes

A portrait of workers in the Lőrinc mill. While following interviews about their personal lives, the spinning mill itself is portrayed in an artistic manner. Mészáros reclaims the space, the manual labour, and the everyday concerns of working women, shaping them into something of cinematic and artistic interest. The film reveals the quiet beauty in physical work, the precise movements of machinery, the ritual of applying makeup before a shift, and presents working women as self-possessed and resilient. It addresses the social struggles of the working class, the struggle to gain a high school diploma, the burden of long hours, the unrelenting pressure of simply getting by. The film is an early work of gender consciousness, not by imagining women as free from their circumstances, but by closely observing and giving space to their everyday reality.

BOBITA

Film Notes

Set against the backdrop of Budapest, Bobita follows a young boy who skips school and wanders the streets, turning the city into his personal playground. Through his eyes, the city becomes a place of wonder, its towering buildings, rigid routines, and asphalted streets take on a raw and picturesque nature. In contrast, the adult world appears distant, joyless, and impenetrable. The grownups he encounters seem consumed by their own concerns, their gestures hollow, their presence fleeting. As the boy drifts between solitude and fleeting moments of delight, his quiet rebellion becomes a portrait of emotional negligence and silent yearning. This clueless search by the boy transforms into a depiction of the complex issues of neglect and abandonment. Especially when the divorced parents show little interest or emotional presence, leaving the child in a constant search for belonging.

MÉSZÁROS LÁSZLÓ EMLÉKÉRE

Film Notes

Márta Mészáros’ tribute to her father, Laszlo Mészáros, a renowned sculptor and socialist in 1930s Hungary. In 1938, only three years after migrating to the USSR, he was wrongfully arrested and, soon after, his wife died giving birth. An orphan, Márta Mészáros found herself alone and far from familiar settings. This artistic homage is composed with striking visual sensitivity and deeply influenced by folk art. Her father’s legacy is evoked through themes of grief, longing, and remembrance. Meszaros weaves her father’s sculptures into the fabric of the film, giving them renewed presence and voice through her own lens. Through this approach, she not only sheds light on her father’s life and fate but also gives both him and his art a voice once more. This cinematic memorial is an accomplished form of agency.
