Film Notes

Undoubtedly, Stalin was a “cinéphile”. And, as all cinephiles, his great passions were: James Cagney (but only action, please, no sex and sentiment!), and Volga Volga. This was a great classic in Stalin’s personal programming. lt is told by witnesses that, when he was angry, or upset for whatever reason, the Minister of cinema, Bolshakov, ran into the deposit and grasped the print of Volga Volga. Stalin, happy and fulfilled, could sit in his armchair, drinking red wine mixed with white wine and relax. Who knows how many people owe their lives to this film? Stalin was so fond of this film, that he sent a print to Roosevelt, as a present, during the war. And it was told Roosevelt was astonished: why is Stalin sending me such an uninteresting comedy, does it have any particular or unevident political meaning? No. lt was just the film Stalin loved the most!
