Film Notes

According to Rohmer, the French language is a legacy to be maintained in the same way as a historic monument. This program is an introduction to the apprenticeship to medieval literature starting with past and present illustrations of the romance by Chrétien de Troyes Perceval. Rohmer says of the literary work: “In the 15th century, the landscape is empty, naked, with a savage almost romantic aspect.” This reading, originally created for teaching old French and as an introduction to Arthurian literature for students, sparked the writing of his feature film Perceval le Gallois in 1978.
