Film Notes

Márta Mészáros’ tribute to her father, Laszlo Mészáros, a renowned sculptor and socialist in 1930s Hungary. In 1938, only three years after migrating to the USSR, he was wrongfully arrested and, soon after, his wife died giving birth. An orphan, Márta Mészáros found herself alone and far from familiar settings. This artistic homage is composed with striking visual sensitivity and deeply influenced by folk art. Her father’s legacy is evoked through themes of grief, longing, and remembrance. Meszaros weaves her father’s sculptures into the fabric of the film, giving them renewed presence and voice through her own lens. Through this approach, she not only sheds light on her father’s life and fate but also gives both him and his art a voice once more. This cinematic memorial is an accomplished form of agency.
