Film Notes
A portrait of workers in the Lőrinc mill. While following interviews about their personal lives, the spinning mill itself is portrayed in an artistic manner. Mészáros reclaims the space, the manual labour, and the everyday concerns of working women, shaping them into something of cinematic and artistic interest. The film reveals the quiet beauty in physical work, the precise movements of machinery, the ritual of applying makeup before a shift, and presents working women as self-possessed and resilient. It addresses the social struggles of the working class, the struggle to gain a high school diploma, the burden of long hours, the unrelenting pressure of simply getting by. The film is an early work of gender consciousness, not by imagining women as free from their circumstances, but by closely observing and giving space to their everyday reality.
