Film Notes

How to approach the poetic works of Edgar Poe (1809-1849) and more specifically in a program for Master’s degree students? In this tribute to the author made in 1965, Eric Rohmer was inspired by the essay Eureka written in 1848 in which the poet promises to talk of “the Physical, Metaphysical and Mathematical — of the Material and Spiritual Universe”. Film here is the most natural bridge to the author’s poetic world, brimming with images, and where form always implies an idea. Indeed, the film helps to understand and explain the literary text, with an approach that employs film excerpts: Le Puits et le pendule by Alexandre Astruc, Vivre sa vie by Jean-Luc Godard, La Chute de la maison Usher by Jean Epstein or clips from Bérénice by the same Eric Rohmer (in which he is also an actor) but attributed to a certain Dirk Peters.
