Eric Rohmer presented the characters of these moral tales as if they were “Don Quixotes” who “think of themselves as characters in a novel, but perhaps there isn’t any novel”. In Le Genou de Claire (Claire’s Knee), the allusion to Don Quixote is explicit: before a painting attributed to a Spanish soldier during the Savoy occupation, the narrator observes that “There is Don Quixote on his wooden horse. He thinks he is going to fly away. They blindfolded him. The bellows make him think the wind is blowing, and the torch gives him the impression he’s nearing the sun”. Rohmer made the following presentation of the program: “I studied Don Quixote as if it did not belong to a language… I treated it as a study of the illustration of a myth or a legend, like the analysis of themes through their illustration. How themes are deformed, how we can recognize them. It could be defined as a comparative study of literature and painting.” (Confronter le texte avec le monde qui l’a inspiré, edited by M. L.
