Film Notes
In 1990, with Twin Peaks, David Lynch revolutionised the world of television serials, captivating 34 million viewers. The Palme d’Or he won that same year for Wild at Heart brought to prominence this master of the strange, who is as intriguing as his films. How did this filmmaker from the fringes of Hollywood become one of the most influential of his generation, imposing his surrealist vision on our screens and in the art world? Painter of the depths of the human soul, Lynch started out in cinema with two films that went on to be cult classics: Eraserhead and Elephant Man. With Blue Velvet, he anchored his images in childhood nostalgia and exposed the shady side of the American dream. This documentary shows us how since Fire Walk with Me, Lynch exploded classic narrative codes to denounce the pretence of Hollywood in Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. Lynch kindly invites the viewer- cum-detective to decipher his plots, placing the search for meaning at the heart of human experience. In a constant battle for creative freedom, he broke free from Hollywood constraints with the help of French producers. With Inland Empire and particularly with Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017, Lynch refused all limitations and explored the possibility of working experimentally in contemporary cinema. Throughout a fascinating investigation, this documentary gathers the clues planted by the director in each of his films to solve the enigma that is David Lynch. At the heart of the famous RedRoom in Twin Peaks, is a huge treasure trail, in which the principal guides are his favourite actors: Laura Dern, Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini.
