“What pushed me to dust off my paintings, after more than 30 years, was the thought that the people who love my films might be intrigued to see from where they originated. Although I stopped painting decades ago I have never missed it, because I believe painting is present throughout my cinema. The idea of exhibiting my art work in close proximity to one of the most beautiful cinema theatres in Italy fills me with joy and at the same time makes me feel protected, as I know there will be a dialogue between my films that are being screened and my paintings. The exhibition starts with some drawings I made as a child, when I was five or six years old, and then continues with oil paintings where, now 20 years old, I had begun to reflect on the problem of representation and therefore staging, lighting, colour… all fundamental stages an artist goes through in the search for their own gaze, which would later prove to be decisive in my journey as a director”.
