Film Notes

Filmed in coordination with the Mexican Student Movement that broke out in the Mexican capital in July 1968, this 16mm work, El grito, was produced by the National Autonomous University of Mexico´s Film School and, despite its status as a collective project, it is attributed to Leobardo Lopez Arretche. It was a true cornerstone in the history of Mexican documentary, only comparable to many activist films made during the period known as the Mexican Revolution (1911-1917). A significant testimony of the days that shook the country prior to the XIX Olympic Games, which culminated in an atrocious repression on October 2 of that emblematic year, El gritoalso set the tone for a cinema with political and social themes, sorely lacking in a society beginning to chafe under the yoke of a state intervention model that had prevailed for decades.
