Film Notes
Learn to see, exercise vision, film the strange beauty of an industrial landscape. Love of the past and the hope that buildings of today may become the patrimony of generations to come motivated Eric Rohmer, author-director of this document: “it is not a question of observing that the world, over one hundred or one hundred fifty years, has changed in appearance due to the direct or indirect influence of the industrial revolution, but about finding an opportunity for meditation or poetic dream in its metamorphosis. The program could have been created with documents, which are certainly many and quite colorful. Risking to flatten the historical scope of the discourse, instead of a collection of beautiful dead images, we preferred the living point of view of a movie camera that recorded just for the occasion images of the contemporary world, but of a world, France of the 1960s, that best displays signs of the recent past, that does not yet give form to the figure to come (“Bulletin de la radio-télévision scolaire”, n. 8, 1964). Les métamorphoses du paysage is one of the most original works created for scholastic television.
