Film Notes

“History teaches us that empires are won with arms but are kept with prestige. Prestige requires a clear and uncompromising racial awareness that establishes not only differences but also superiority. The Jewish problem is nothing but a facet of this phenomenon”.

(Benito Mussolini, Trieste, 1938)

The Archivio Nazionale Cinematografico della Resistenza brings to light the full documentary of Mussolini’s visit to Trieste on September 18, 1938, where in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia he announced his decision to enforce racial laws that would oust Jews from society. A document of dramatic importance for the history of Italy, the only copy has been preserved by the archive in Turin and will soon be restored in collaboration with Istituto Luce Cinecittà.
