Film Notes

Ten minutes of original outtakes from Sunrise were saved by Murnau’s editor, Harold Schuster. These shots come from various parts of the film, usually only one alternative per shot. They include the uncut complex master shot of the City Woman’s walk toward the Man’s home, where she stops and whistles to call him to her, an alternate version of the famous tracking shot as the Man makes his way through the swamp toward the moonlit City Woman, and longer takes of shots that appear in the final film for only a few seconds. In the restaurant scene in the city, we can see Murnau briefly before the camera giving directions to the actors.
