The films in this programme, and in those that follow, are not presented in chronological order. The intention is to give the evening the feel of a screening as it would have been presented by Derek Jarman in the 70’s – mixed according to mood rather than anything else. Very little is known about Silver Apples for Karen Blixen, a short black and white work, but it must have been important to Jarman as he had a 16mm print made. Studio Bankside is a record of the warehouse and its surroundings. Jarman rented the warehouse, located on the south bank of the Thames, in the early 70’s and it served both as his home and studio. Journey to Avebury is a landscape film set in and around the largest of England’s great stone circles. (This film also forms part of In the Shadow of the Sun – see programme 2). Gerald’s Film is a continuous reel portrait of the photographer Gerald Incandela, filmed in and around a ruined Elizabethan boathouse in Essex. Derek made several films of this type, which were edited completely in camera. Miss World documents one of Andrew Logan’s Alternative Miss World pageants, that were a big part of the London art scene in the 70’s (and still occasionally are). Alongside his film works Derek assembled all the out-takes and snippets of home movie footage into a series of diary films titled It Happened by Chance – this is one reel from that diary. Miss Gaby and Andrew Logan Kisses The Glitterati are staged works featuring some of the luminaries of 70’s London.
