Film Notes

«This unique love story brings together the humble daughter of a fisherman and a rich, aristocratic, libertine seducer. Handled with a rare and profound sense of truth, it is the story of Stellina, magnificently reproduced in its natural setting of Venice by Film d’Arte Italiana. The first part is profoundly sentimental, not preparing audiences at all for the tragic second part, which comes unexpected and sadly – though it is highly effective. Among the fine modern productions by Film d’Arte Italiana, this is one of the most harmonic and suggestive: its realistic dramatic force will ensure its success.» («Rivista Pathé», 26/1/1913)

«The work is quite good both for its body of scenes and for its acting, but the ending is not convincing. The photography is excellent and, as always, the coloring is first-rate.» («L’Illustrazione Cinematografica», 5-10/3/1913)

Following a scathing review in the Venice paper «L’Adriatico», the film provoked a heated debate on the concept of criticism, on how critics should behave, on their rights but above all on their obligations, affirming the importance of the public as unquestionable judge.

The print was restored to its original colors, for which it had been quite appreciated.
