Film Notes

This is an interesting trailer as it hardly contains any images and no dialogue from the finished film. Instead it opens with a sequence that takes place in the studio before the shooting of Såsom i en spegel began, with Bergman and the four actors reading the manuscript to each other and discussing some of the finer points. This sequence is somewhat staged, but ingeniously shot and it also explains why the English title of the film, Through a Glass Darkly, is actually more accurate than the Swedish title (which literally translates as “Through a Glass”). The trailer also includes silent 16mm footage from the on-location shooting of Såsom i en spegel on the island of Fårö. Bergman recounts, in voice-over, the joys and problems of shooting and we see him chatting with cinematographer Sven Nykvist and giving instructions to the actors. Bergman focuses on an episode in which the entire cast and crew constructed a bridge in order to shoot inside a ship-wreck some thirty meters off the shoreline, which highlights the collective nature of filmmaking.
