Film Notes

The Pearl of the Army was one of the most successful serials produced during the first world war, but there was only one copy known to be in existence, preserved at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and that was extremely incomplete, being only 9 of the 30 reels. Then a copy was found at the Cinémathèque Française (entitled Le Courrier de Washington) which is almost complete, missing only two reels. Unfortunately, the French version is abbreviated and spliced compared to the original, a technique already used by Pathé for Les Mystères de New York. In fact Le Courrier de Washington has only 10 episodes compared to the 15 episodes of two reels each in Pearl of the Army and in the process of adaptation there were significant changes produced, especially after the fifth installment of the French edition in the disposition of the internal beginnings and endings.
