Film Notes
Film d’Arte Italiana always drew upon national history when making historical films, which can be divided into two groups: those that exulted the exploits of great noble families that dominated Italy – the Borgias, the Medicis, the Colonnas, the Estes, the Dorias… – and those set during the Risorgimento. Lucrezia Borgia obviously falls into the former category. Made in the same year as Cesare Borgia (1912), this film was successful around the world. Not only was it distributed throughout Europe, but also in the United States: «Lucrezia Borgia has chosen to portray part of a life rich with historical memories. The numerous cast is quite competent, but the actress in the role of Lucrezia particularly stands out. Her talent has reached full maturity. She is naturally charming, possessing all the wiles and subtle manners that distinguish an experienced actress.» («The Moving Picture World», 1913)
