Film Notes

Though due to the weakness of the script, this film can hardly be called a success, its interest lies in the style of performances, tricks, and especially crowd scenes, which, apart from famous crowd scenes in Ejzenstejn’s Strike, was a rare thing to find in Soviet films of the time. The officiate in charge of Soviet cinema, who had expected The Ray of Death to be more of a political propaganda movie, accused Kuleshov of formalism and “detachment from the Soviet reality.”
