Film Notes
If the son of Beelzebub is suffering d’ennui, where can he cure himself if not in Paris? and what woman if not a young, ingenuous and passionate French “paysanne” can defeat, with the power of Love, the Devil and Death? Fantastic Apologue, a small sketch, surreal humour and romantic drama are happily merged in this delicious comedy, which demonstrates the surprising degree of maturity of Pathé’s production in its first decade. From a copy in black and white of the original French version – already recovered in its turn from the Cineteca Nazionale – and from an nitrate print with colouring from the era of the Italian edition, recently rediscovered in the archives of the same Cineteca, it has been possible to complete the restoration of the film in its original form. The work was completed in the laboratory of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematographia-Cineteca Nazionale, at Cinecittà, in the ambit of the recovery project for original French cinema, carried out in collaboration with the Centre Nationale de la Cinemathographie – Les Archives du film, and a contribution of the Proiecto Lumière.
