Film Notes

This film is an enchanting version of Charles Perrault’s fairy tale. A magical atmosphere is created through a perfect balance between visual tricks and narration, and especially thanks to the stencil colouring. The precise colouring creates a kaleidoscopic and stylized universe in which the real external scenes and those filmed in the studio fit together seamlessly. The device chosen to represent the passing of time and the arrival of prince Vezzoso in the enchanted castle is impressive. The version presented here is printed from a nitrate print with original Italian intertitles which is conserved in the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino.
