Film Notes

Commissioned by Reggio Emilia’s Cine Centrale, the documentary was shot on 22 January 1910. Luca Comerio was asked to realise a filmed account of the funeral of Andrea Costa, the most important exponent of the Italian Socialist movement of the time. The camera goes right into the funeral chamber and shows the main passages of a collective ritual that, through cinema, becomes truly public: the coffin’s exit from Imola’s municipal building, the political figures in attendance, the imposing funeral procession that travelled from the town hall to the Fornace Gallotti, the speeches and the coffin’s departure for Bologna. Here we see the imposing procession from Porta Mazzini to Piazza Malpighi, where the images end.
