Film Notes

This Wyler’s film is almost ignored, though it seems to be one of the best westerns of the time with an unforgettable finale in the desert that reminds Stroheim’s Greed.
“Hell’s Heroes is gripping and real. Unusually well cast and directed”. (Variety, 1/1/30)
“Also shot on location in Majave Desert and Panamint Valley […], (HeII’s Heroes) was the studio’s first all sound outdoor film. […] Less static than most early sound films, it was indeed a realistic film that remains impressive for adding so much depth to such a slight story”. (Jim Hitt, The American West from Fiction to Film, New York, 1990)
