Film Notes
This film about a shipwreck caused by a fire seems to have served as a study for the epic Atlantis that premiered a year later. The film is not particularly noteworthy for its acting, but what does make it interesting is the action drama which is intensified by the refined contrast editing between Psilander who tries to entertain the passengers in the ship lounge and the fire on deck. The film had two different endings, a happy one for most countries and a sad one that was particularly popular with Russian distributors. This shows that film narrative was not determined by dramatic necessity or logical structure, but simply by profit. In other words, if customers were willing to pay, they could have whatever they wanted.
