The reconstruction al Die Freudlose Gasse is not completed yet, and many problems are still to be resolved. This version is the result of a many years work and it is based on the collation of four different versions: an english one, a french one, a russian one plus an american one which is a synthesis of the french and the italian version. Unfortunately the german censorship papers are still missing, so the reconstruction of the original text and of the exact position of the intertitles is not possible.
Here is the surprisingly negative review published by Variety (6/7/27): “The picture has minor virtues and major defects. The principal drawback is that it’s fearfully lond and dull, besides being hard to follow in its complications. […] Some of the character types […] are excellent in portraiture, and the settings are generally interesting […]. But the women are impossible”. (Variety, 6/7/27)
