Film Notes

Four years ago the Nederlands Filmmuseum was given a collection of films by heirs of a Haarlem collector. The collection contained over two thousand reels in poor condition and with no catalogue or description whatsoever. Month after month, reel after reel, fragments of one title after another came to light, and not just fragments either. One of the reels showed Gloria Swanson with none other than Rodolfo Valentino. Obviously the film had to be Beyond the Rocks, the only movie the two stars appeared in together. Apart from a short fragment unearthed by the Nederlands Filmmuseum in 1976, the film had been declared lost. So when the first reel of Beyond the Rocks turned up, everyone hoped it would not be the last. At the end of 2003 the sixth and final reel of film was found and now the movie is almost complete and only six or seven minutes are missing from the copy shown here. The tinting is original and the captions are in Dutch.
